Objectives

The event aims to gather employers, psychology alumni, postgraduates and undergraduates for an information exchange session so as to increase awareness of psychology opportunities in Singapore. We hope to bridge the information gap between undergraduates, alumni and organisations, to facilitate the exchange of information on career and postgraduate study experiences amongst attendees. We also hope to provide a platform for networking opportunities with potential employers and colleagues.

The event hopes to achieve these goals for each of the following categories:

UNDERGRADUATES

  • To explore career options in psychology, graduate school and career alternatives after graduating in psychology.

  • To gain a better understanding of psychology-related fields in Singapore

ALUMNI

  • To give back to their alma maters.

  • Share experiences and insights about psychology careers, graduate school and other alternatives.

ORGANIZATIONS

  • To provide an employer’s perspective on the employability of psychology students.

As a Child Protection Officer, Yu Yan conducts social investigations and provides case management services for children and young persons who have been abused or neglected by their parents or caregivers. For the past 3 years, Yu Yan’s job as a CPO has taken her through some of the most challenging situations such as tackling hostile parents and removing children from their parents’ care. For this symposium, she will be sharing her thoughts about her challenging, yet immensely meaningful job in the social service sector.

MERRILYN

Merrilyn is a Programme Manager at the Student Wellbeing Centre of Nanyang Technological University. She graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelors in Arts (Psychology) with Honours in 2009. Having her initial work experience at the Institute of Mental Health and the Centre for Effective Living, Merrilyn moved from intervention and treatment work to prevention and outreach. As a Programme Manager, Merrilyn has been focusing her efforts on mental health education and resource development for the past 5 years to reduce stigma and increase knowledge of the mental health field as a complement to the intervention work provided by her counselling team. For this symposium, she will be sharing her thoughts about the essential contribution of outreach and education on the field of psychology and mental health.

SERENE

Serene is a Measurement Psychologist in SAF Centre for Leadership Development. She graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor in Arts (Psychology) with Honours in 2011.

Her current area of work involves conducting exploratory research, assessment, feedback and impact studies.

During her time as a teacher, she had an affinity towards students with special needs and had attended courses in the area to help her students better. She also worked closely with the school counsellors and parents to ensure that the students received the necessary support and pastoral care.

For this symposium, she will be sharing her thoughts as a psychologist in SAF and her past experiences as a MOE teacher.

SESSION 3

LOWEE

Lowee graduated from NTU Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) in 2015 and started her own flower shop Keira Floral upon graduation. While waiting for interviews, she grabbed the window opportunity to pursue her interests. This blossomed into something more than just a hobby as she knows clearly that someday, what she would like to own is not just another flower shop, but a place where people's lives can be better through a combination of her floral works and passion for psychology.

She will be sharing on other avenues that undergraduates could go into besides the usual envisioned "psych-related" careers. Her own personal experience of starting her own shop and the considerations one has to make will also be shared. As only about half of the past psychology graduates venture into psychology related

careers, Lowee would like to provide undergraduates with the full picture of what the alumni face.
